The Open Mic is returning to Society City in Wollongong September 2026, Every Wednesday and each event being professionally filmed.

The return builds on the long running Open Mic program previously operated through the University of Wollongong. What started as a small platform for local musicians developed into one of the region's most consistent opportunities for emerging artists to perform, connect with other musicians and gain real experience in front of an audience.

Over more than six years, the UOW Open Mic program delivered more than 100 events and provided opportunities for hundreds of performers. The program became particularly known for supporting original music and emerging artists, while also providing professional photography, video, recordings and promotional material that many young musicians otherwise would not have had access to.

The program documented a significant part of Wollongong's developing music scene. Bands were formed through the events, solo artists played their first shows, and many performers went on to play larger venues and develop their own projects.

The new Society City events are intended to continue that work, with a particular focus on original artists and giving performers something more than simply a slot on a stage.

All three events will be professionally filmed, providing performers with high quality footage that can be used for promotion, social media, EPKs and future opportunities.

The events are open to musicians across different genres and levels of experience. Established performers are welcome, but the focus remains on giving emerging artists a genuine opportunity to perform and develop.

The Open Mic returns to Society City September 2026.

For artists who have been part of the Open Mic before, it is a chance to return to the stage. For those who are new to it, it is an opportunity to become part of something that has been supporting Wollongong musicians for years.
