Daniel Twining- Episode 8

Daniel Twining is an Australian singer songwriter known for his emotionally honest, stripped back style rooted in folk and alternative country. Often described playfully as creating “sad country,” his music leans into themes of heartbreak, longing, self reflection and quiet resilience.

Inspired by artists such as City and Colour, Bruce Springsteen and Nathaniel Rateliff, Dan’s sound blends intimate acoustic storytelling with a raw, soulful vocal delivery. Entirely self taught, he writes instinctively rather than technically, allowing songs to unfold naturally without strict adherence to formal structure. This gives his music a sincere, unpolished authenticity that connects deeply in live settings.

As a performer, his aim is simple but powerful: to quiet a room and draw listeners into a shared emotional space. Whether playing small venues or larger stages, he focuses on meaning over spectacle, creating moments where audiences can find their own stories within his lyrics.

At his core, Daniel is an artist driven not by industry ambition, but by the need to write honestly and sing songs that matter — both to himself and to the people listening.

Next Chapter :

In this heartfelt episode of Next Chapter, Emma sits down with singer songwriter Dan to explore his journey into music, creativity, and rediscovery. Dan shares that he didn’t connect with music until his late teens, eventually picking up the guitar at 16 and teaching himself to play. Inspired by emotionally driven artists like City and Colour, Bruce Springsteen, and Nathaniel Rateliff, his friends jokingly describe his style as “sad country” — a label he happily embraces.

Entirely self-taught, Dan approaches songwriting instinctively, unbound by formal rules. He follows feeling over formula, allowing songs to unfold naturally. His primary goal on stage is simple yet powerful: to quiet a room and create a shared emotional moment where listeners can find their own meaning within his words.

Performing tracks from his first EP, written during a formative heartbreak a decade ago, Dan reflects on growth — both musically and personally. Over the years, he has developed a broader appreciation for different styles and found inspiration collaborating with other writers, including sessions in Nashville that challenged and expanded his perspective.

After stepping away from music for a period, Dan realised how deeply he missed it. Now, free from the pressure of turning it into a career, he has returned to his original purpose: writing honest songs and singing them to people. His appearance on Next Chapter marks not just a performance, but a meaningful return — a reminder that sometimes the most important goal is simply to keep playing.
